This tutorial will lead you through the steps required to run your very first reservoir simulation using Flow<\/code>. We will take a look at how we can simulate the\u00a0 reservoir model from the 1st SPE Comparative Solution Project\u00a0 (CSP)\u00a0designed for benchmarking 3D black-oil simulators<\/p>\n

The SPE1 reservoir model employs a three-layer permeability structure and contains an injection well and a production well. Initially the reservoir is filled with oil and water, and gas is injected through the injection well.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The tutorial assumes that you are familiar with Linux, have Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04 installed, and are allowed to run the sudo<\/code> command.<\/p>\n

We will explain how to\u00a0install the required tools, download a test dataset, run the simulator, and finally inspect the simulation results.<\/p>\n

Installing\u00a0the required software<\/h3>\n

Details on installing Flow<\/code> on different platforms is outlined on the installation instructions<\/a> page. Follow those instructions, and then come back to this tutorial.<\/p>\n

You can verify that Flow<\/code> is installed by entering the command “flow” on the command line. You should see a message containing\u00a0a long list of\u00a0command-line options. If you installed from source instead of binary packages you must give the full path to the Flow executable instead of just typing “flow” (for example “~\/opm\/opm-simulators\/build\/bin\/flow”), or put that directory in your PATH.<\/p>\n

Download dataset<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0Open Porous Media initiative has\u00a0made\u00a0several benchmark datasets available under an Open Database License. The datasets are available on Github,\u00a0https:\/\/github.com\/OPM\/opm-data<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The datasets include models of synthetic and realistic reservoirs, and in particular open versions of the models from several of the SPE Comparative Solution Projects<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the simulation model of the\u00a0Norne<\/a>\u00a0field.<\/p>\n

The simplest way to get the datasets is to download them as a zip file from Github:<\/p>\n

cd ~\/\r\nwget https:\/\/github.com\/OPM\/opm-data\/archive\/master.zip<\/pre>\n
Note that this is quite a big download (about 200 MB). Once downloaded, you can unzip it using the following command:<\/p>\n

This will give you a directory structure with all the datasets.<\/p>\n

Running Flow<\/code><\/h3>\n
We are now ready to run Flow<\/code>. Start off by entering the directory containing the SPE1 dataset,<\/p>\n
cd opm-data-master\/spe1<\/pre>\n
From here, you can execute Flow<\/code> by giving the file name of the input deck as a parameter:<\/p>\n

The results of the simulation can be viewed\u00a0with several different tools, but we will here use the tool-chain that has the fewest dependencies.<\/p>\n
First, we will examine which variables we can view using the ecl_summary<\/code>\u00a0tool from libecl<\/code><\/a>, which should already be installed since libecl<\/code>\u00a0is needed by Flow<\/code>.\u00a0(Note: if you installed libecl from source, the program is called summary.x<\/code> and will be located in your build directory.) By typing<\/p>\n
